Ever since the team of Aerocity Live started planning for this 
issue on ‘Futuristic Designs’, there was much discussion 
on what is important in the design of a space, furniture 
or other objects. With design as a discipline becoming 
much sought after across the globe and design experts 
redefining what constitutes a good design, a consensus is emerging 
that function is more important than form, ie usage takes precedence 
over beauty. A highly ornate home or furniture piece might not lend 
itself well to regular cleaning. A three-legged chair, perhaps a great 
piece of art, is hardly a comfortable seat. 
Having said that, various species attempt to make their abode a 
work of harmony. A bird weaving a beautiful nest is a case of functional 
need but one that is naturally aesthetic. The web that a spider weaves 
is marvellously harmonious.

In this first issue of 2025, we at GMR Aerocity LIVE magazine and BW Businesworld
extend our deepest gratitude to you, our readers, partners, and contributors, for
the overwhelming love and support you have shown in 2024. Your engagement
and enthusiasm have been instrumental in shaping this publication, making it

A new OTT series grabbing eyeballs unfortunately rakes
up the age-old Delhi-versus-Mumbai debate. It’s bizarre
that at a time when distances are shrinking and social
media is bringing the world together, certain privileged
folks should become territorial and exclude the other.
Yes, we are all creatures of comfort and would hate to relocate even
within a city. But the beauty lies in embracing the other influences
too. Life in Delhi has been made richer by the dressing habits and
cuisines that outsiders brought with them – after all who can imagine
a celebration in Delhi without butter chicken and dal makhani – and
the Hindi film industry, the pride of Mumbai, was enriched by actors
and directors from North, South, East and West, including what is
now Pakistan. The big stalwarts of the industry, Late Dilip Kumar,
Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are all outsiders.

A popular Hindi TV serial ‘Office Office' exposed everything
that can be wrong about workplaces. Funny though the
serial was, the dismal work atmosphere that it portrayed
has been typical of quite a few workplaces. Apathy
towards work, worn-out furniture, piles of files and
paan stains is hardly conducive to quality work. But that office setting
represented a different ethos, when jobs were secure and there was not
much incentive for improvement.
In the globalised economy and concern for bottom lines, much is
expected from employees. It is only natural therefore, that employees
too expect a workplace that is welcoming – a workplace that is bright,
cheery, well laid out and with care for ergonomics. A place that cares
for employees’ wellbeing & safety and where people from diverse
backgrounds & nationalities can come to work for eight hours a day.
And a place free from bias or prejudices.
GMR Aerocity exemplifies that ethos. Laid out in modern design
principles, it is welcoming in every sense of the term. While the office
spaces are congenial to productive work, there are ample open areas
and eating options for relaxed ‘me time’ and for socialising over a cup of
coffee. For the Millennials and Gen Zs, who like to work and party hard,
there is a world of cuisines on the platter. And they need not worry about
late hours, so well connected is Aerocity to the rest of the city.
In this issue focussing on Aerocity and the global workforce, we
spoke to a number of professionals working in various capacities. One
hotel professional recounted how she has seen the entire ecosystem
being built in front of her, like a baby grow in front of you. She recounted
how a year of being away from Aerocity due to another job opportunity
was difficult for her.

Among the fondest memories we all cherish are those of
our journeys. Of summer trips to grandparents, bus full of
students singing all the way to destination during school
trips, toy train ride to Shimla or Darjeeling and if we were
among the luckiest ones, a plain journey about which we
would brag for months to come. Changing trains, making do with average
road-side public utilities and delays were no cause for fuss, we
enjoyed the journey as we did the destination.

We also highlight how some other cities, including Goa, Hyderabad
and Visakhapatnam have bolstered their tourism potential by strengthening
connectivity and also, how our coastal destination are getting a
boost now thanks to improved air connectivity.
Showcasing the advances in transport are three museums we highlight
in this issue – Heritage Transport Museum, Metro Museum and
Railway Museum. Reading these pages, I have already added these on
my bucket list.
No travel in India is complete without trying the Dhaba Food and in
this issue too, we highlight some tempting options of Dhaba Food in
Delhi NCR and Aerocity.

As we celebrate the dawn
of a new year, we witness
a significant boom in travel
segment. Globally and
within the country, there
is a surge in the number of people who
head to locations prominent on the tourist
circuit as well as offbeat locations.
Delhi, on account of its pleasant
weather in the winter months, is a hotspot
for travellers from across the world
and country. They look to savour the
rich culture, heritage, food and art forms
here. Delhi is hub of visual and performing
art forms here, and several prominent
galleries display art as it has evolved over
centuries, especially in the 20th century.
GMR Aerocity is one ecosystem
which, while being a hospitality district,
is also a rich repository of arts, and promotes
arts. Its constituent hotels have
launched several initiatives to promote
artists, and showcase their arts. The
Square at Aerocity has hosted several
exhibitions over the years as a window
to the capital’s art scene. Some of these
art works have been covered in this issue
of Aerocity Live.

In every sphere, God preserves the best for the last and the same
holds true for the best three months of the year when the comfort
of the cold winter months comes along with the flurry of festive
activity. People of Delhi, yearning for good weather and feeling
happy at the respite from harsh summers, make the best of these
months. Be it Diwali, Gurupurab or Christmas and New Year, they join in
the celebrations irrespective of their denomination.
This spirit is wonderfully exemplified at Aerocity, where there is
celebratory mood during these months. There is much fun-fare during
festival time; stalls selling ethnic and festive items and eatables come up,
activities are organised for visitors of various age groups and interests
and notes of music add to the jovial atmosphere.

Big events bring with them great opportunities for the
host destinations. Each time the country’s capital has
hosted a mega event, it has been accompanied by an
infrastructure push. In the run up to the Asian Games
in 1982, the capital saw a rush of flyover construction;
a number of iconic stadia were built and the Asiad Village came up.
Same happened when the Commonwealth Games were organised.
Imagine then, the benefit of hosting the G20 Summit, when expert
delegations from 20 countries – with 80 per cent share in the world
economy – have been participating in events at about 100 locations
across the country. It’s not just a handful of cities that are getting the
chance to showcase their tourism potential but the entire country, and
to the whole world.
Once the event is over in September, the time to do cost-benefit
analysis will come. It will be important to understand the infrastructure
additions required for specific regions and also to ponder on how
to develop tourism potential in a sustainable way, so that the earlier
mistakes that tourism spots across the world have been committing
can be avoided. Can we develop a carbon-neutral, plastic-free tourism
infrastructure?
And in this regard, can the Aerocity Hospitality District show the way?
With great public transport connectivity thanks to the Airport Express
Line of Metro, hotels and office of WorldMark investing in energy and
water efficiency, green spaces (including even chemical-free vegetable
gardens) and getting rid of single-use plastic, the Aerocity Hospitality
District is a great example of developing tourism infrastructure the right
way.

Jowar, bajra and ragi were regular staples in Indian kitchens,
depending upon the region where one lived. One didn’t
need western wisdom to consume locally-grown food – it
was a given. Then came the incursion of refined grains into
our kitchens and the old staples were pushed out of our
lives. Suddenly, they came to be labelled as coarse, poor cousins of
refined food items.
Besides food, this issue also contains certain spots that must
be on every person’s ‘must visit’ list. As we inch towards our 76th
Independence Day celebration, a visit to the newly-opened Partition
Museum provides a sordid reminder of the violence that accompanied
the celebratory mood of Independence in 1947. But the museum also
provides hope and succour, as the story as portrayed in the museum
ends with people picking up threads again, rebuilding lives, and
overcoming grief and resentment.
Yet another destination that is highlighted in the issue is Sanchi,
located close to the Tropic of Cancer in Madhya Pradesh, which is a
rich treasure trove of heritage. Looking at the photographs, one was
spellbound by the richness of art, and by the fact that more than 2,000
years ago, there was such an intermingling of influences between East
and the West.

I often thank the modern corporate culture for helping us overcome
many of the deep-seated notions we harbored for long. Notions of
superiority based on colour, caste, region, religion and gender were
so ingrained, we not only didn't questioned them, we laughed along
when popular movies made fun of people who were different from us.
Any difference became a subject of caricature.
I salute to the brave spirit of the service industry, especially hospitality,
who involve people in their growth story. In this issue dedicated to Diversity
and Inclusion in the Aerocity hospitality district, we bring to you interviews
of persons who have broken stereotypes and are performing challenging
roles in various departments of hotels. It could be Devinder Basera, working
at the Front Desk at Lemon Tree Hotels Ltd; Chandan, an employee with
hearing and speech impairment, working in-room dining and F&B service
at Andaz Delhi; or Ambika, fulfilling her ambition to be a chef at Holiday Inn
rubbing shoulders with largely male staff in the Kitchen.
The process of sensitization of the entire staff so that there is no hurt
or bias at workplace is equally commendable. Thus, Lemon Tree Hotels
Ltd actually trains its entire 6,500-strong staff in Indian Sign Language so
that they can communicate with their colleagues with hearing and speech
impairment. Such narrative of courage and empathy lends a new meaning
to ‘hospitality.

Globally, people are travelling with a vengeance after Covid.
And women travellers are not behind. Not just in groups,
they are bold enough to travel solo now. For peaceful
contemplation, for pursuing their hobby, or to tick mark
places on bucket list which might not resonate with family
members, or any other reason, they are finding time and resources to travel
alone. But what is topmost on any traveller’s priority is the twin need of
safety and hygienic environment. So, for solo women travellers thinking of
travelling to Delhi NCR, GMR Aerocity is the right place to stay and base
